What is Moissanite?

What is moissanite?

Moissanite is a beautiful clear gemstone that possesses more fire and brilliance than a diamond. Moissanite's story began when a meteor struck what is now Arizona tens of thousands of years ago. Very small silicon carbide crystals resulted from this spectacular event. In 1893, a French chemist named Henri Moissan was sampling rocks in Arizona's Canyon Diablo when he discovered these crystals that were later named Moissanite. All moissanite available today is sustainably lab-grown.

Is moissanite durable?

Moissanite is incredibly durable, which is why it's sought after for engagement rings and wedding bands by people who do not want a diamond. The Mohs hardness scale rates moissanite at 9.25 and diamonds at 10 making moissanite considerably harder than other diamond alternatives such as topaz and sapphires. Moissanite is not prone to scratching or chipping. Its durability make it suitable for everyday wear.

Is moissanite expensive?

In comparison to diamonds, moissanite costs approximately 80% less than diamonds. Moissanite stones are always in the VS clarity range or higher. Moissanite engagement rings in Toronto, and Canada more broadly, retail closer to or slightly above the cost of other semi-precious gemstone engagement rings depending on the brand, color, and size of the center stone.

Forever Ring offers it's house brand Forever Ring Moissanite, Colvard Forever One, Harro Gem and Neo to ensure we can accommodate every customer's request.

Does lab-grown mean it's not real?

Lab-grown means re-creating what is available in nature and should not to be confused with synthetic stones that are completely man-made. The marketing of diamonds has been very successful, but natural moissanite is truly rare. To date, the largest natural moissanite crystal found is only 4 mm! Aside from being a clear gemstone, moissanite and diamonds are chemically and optically different. Moissanite out sparkles any diamond and reflects a bit more color.
